100indecisions: my chains are broken (Doctor = Harry Potter fan. *wibble*)
This would be a fic I finally finished a few days ago and typed up yesterday--for the first [livejournal.com profile] nest_of_spiders prompt. Yes. It was a busy semester, what can I say? (Also, my title is lame.)

Title: The Morning After
Characters: Remus, James, Sirius, a bit of Peter; mentions Snape
Rating: G
Word count: 696
Disclaimer: All the usual ones. The bits about werewolf laws are, by and large, pulled out of my nether regions.
Summary: There are pranks, and then there are pranks. Sometimes, though, the joke goes too far.
Prompt: Day 1 (shut up): A joke's a very serious thing.
A/N: Not Sirius/Remus. Took a different direction with the prompt than the quote was going, I think, but that's how the plotbunny bites.

'It wasn't funny,' Remus says. )

Waaaaaugh.

Okay, so basically I'm the Most Horrible Person in the Universe, Ever, and would you like to know why? Well, I will tell you: last August (the 23rd, I believe), [livejournal.com profile] ressie_noldo had a birthday. And in advance of said birthday, she requested birthdayfic of Sirius Black in a trenchcoat. I started working on it the week before her birthday. I really, truly did.

And then, uh...well, first of all, it got long. I figured it would be short (because there was no plot. It was young!Sirius. In a black trenchcoat. Who needs plot?) and then it kept going and going, mostly because I didn't just sit myself down and write it in one sitting like I planned to, and then the fall semester started, and it was Bad, and I kept working on it even more slowly, and then Christmas break started, and it was also Bad, although I did manage to use some of my breaks at work to type it up and that. According to an old entry, I actually finished the thing around Dec. 22, 2006. And I wrote an oddball summary of it in my 2006 fanfic review even though I still wasn't ready to post it.

So, um...it's totally taken me this long to finish editing it. Mostly because I wasn't, you know, actively working on such an awful lot. I did do some of that during Christmas break, and then it just sort of...didn't happen...and on my little trip to Indianapolis I finally printed it out and made notes all over it on the airplane flight home (after doing homework. Yes, I did homework on the plane. It wasn't fun. Accomplished a lot, though.), and it still took me until yesterday to put in all those edits and then today to post it. Because I am just that awesome.

Anyway...yeeeah. Is it slightly problematic that as soon as I started thinking about this fic (over six months ago, shut up), I immediately started picturing Sirius in a black trenchcoat, and that said black trenchcoat made me temporarily picture him like Amon from Witch Hunter Robin? Because he's pretty fangirl-bait, and he also has longish black hair and a black trenchcoat. Except he broods a lot more than Sirius does. (You can see Amon's coat better in this picture or this one.) Other disclaimers: most of the Muggle-obsession bits were inspired by either [livejournal.com profile] ressie_noldo or [livejournal.com profile] faeriemaiden , so I'm afraid I can't take much credit for most of those; I don't think I wrote Walburga well at all; I thought this would be strictly funny but should have known better, considering my tastes, so yes, it goes pretty quickly into angst; I think my ending is kind of lame; no, I really couldn't help getting in a dig at Sirius/Remus; this is my first James-centric fic, which is weird because I've written Sirius and Remus before but never James, but the plotbunny just wanted James this time; and my treatment of Peter is making me feel like a Suethor. But it's not my fault, I swear--for one, I'm not good at writing more than a few people in a scene, and I don't feel I know Peter's personality well enough to write him properly, and when I first started thinking about it, I was picturing all of this with only Sirius, Remus, and James, and by the time I realized I'd left Peter out, it was just going to be too hard to shoehorn him back in when there wasn't really anything for him to do. So I had to shoehorn in an explanation for his absence instead.

Yeah, so. Hope you still like, Noldo, especially after the long wait and all my rambling here. >_<
According to Sirius—although James wasn’t entirely certain he believed him—the trenchcoat was the final straw. )

"This" being, um, having written a fic. But not just any fic, no--a Dr. Who fic. Why is this so out of the ordinary as to warrant italics, you may ask? Well, seeing as my entire knowledge of canon comes from 1) absorbing stuff from [livejournal.com profile] avendya, [livejournal.com profile] ressie_noldo, and a little bit [livejournal.com profile] honorh (and then, realizing later that I have exposed myself to spoilers, going back and re-reading some of said spoilers, and getting depressed about Rose's fate or lack thereof), 2) reading synposes of all the Nine episodes (and the two or three Ten ones I missed) on Outpost Gallifrey, and 3) watching three whole episodes of Ten...the fact that I actually had the gall to write fic already is...

Well, yeah.

And it doesn't help that having never read any Dr. Who fic except Noldo's Ad Infinitum, I have no idea what kinds of things are and aren't written in the fandom, but I'm guessing from the subject matter of my fic that it's the sort of thing everybody and and their mom has already done. That, or something or other has canon'd me and I don't know enough about canon to know it. (I mean, I don't do these things, really. I look up everything on the Lexicon when I'm writing HP fic.)

But, you know, I was just so grateful to get a ficlet plotbunny that let me write it all in one sitting, more or less, that I couldn't stop myself.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't have a title, either.

He thinks, this is the hardest time. )

...though not as desperate as when I posted it on my Xanga. But still.

I am finally going to do the drabble meme that [livejournal.com profile] faequeene and [livejournal.com profile] faeriemaiden and I don't know who else did, because I always do what everyone else does, except it takes me yonks longer to jump on the bandwagon than it does everyone else. :p

What does that mean? It means anyone who comments on this entry, or one of my other recent entries, gets to request a drabble from me. That's a short fic of 100 words, if you don't know. I will try to discipline myself to actually 100 words. Maybe. Can be any fandom you think I'm familiar with, and you can be as specific as you like about the characters and/or situations involved (you can leave poetry or song fragments and tell me to build off them, too), though I'm most likely to manage something in Harry Potter or Tolkien (other reasonably good ones are Narnia, Firebird, Legends of the Guardian-King, Lost, and Star Wars).

And no, if you are on both Xanga and LJ, that does not mean you get to request two drabbles. :p

Yeah. And now I really need to get going.
100indecisions: my chains are broken (mae)
I don't really know what I think of this story.

The plotbunny for it bit me ages ago, and it took me close to forever--probably a couple months--to write it, because most of the time I was only writing a couple sentences a night...very bad way to write something that's intended to be short, because then it comes out all choppy and incoherent, and all those great lines you had originally and all the ways you knew it was going to make sense just dribble away, until you're left with something you're sure isn't as good as it should be, but you don't know how to fix it. The date on the file is February, but I'm not sure when I actually finished writing it. Just finished typing it up today, though.

Well, and reading Shifts between finishing this fic and typing most of it up didn't help either. Now I have to wonder whether it's just bad, period, or if it's only bad in comparison to Shifts (and there is a huge difference there).

Either way, here it is in all its (mostly unedited, and completely untitled) glory. Or lack thereof.

But Remus knows the truth now, and so he wonders different things. They are not pleasant either. )

Any help on this would be wonderful. Titles, too, assuming I don't decide to scrap it completely (which would be sad, since it's five pages on Word, and that's a long fic for me).
100indecisions: my chains are broken (plotbunny)
So I had two plotbunnies last night, and I think they were both...classic badfic, or things that would get me detainment at HFA, or something. And I don't want to let them go.

Plotbunny number 1: a vampire attends Hogwarts. No, really. She was bitten shortly before she got her letter, and her parents arranged for her to go to Hogwarts anyway, making various precautions with Dumbledore--a la Remus going to Hogwarts and all--so she wouldn't endanger herself (sunlight, not getting enough blood) or other students (y'know, the whole "attacking people and sucking their blood" thing could put a damper on the learning environment they're trying to foster).

Plotbunny number 2: a Harry Potter/Lord of the Rings crossover AU thing. Again: no, really. At some point shortly after HBP, Harry and Frodo switch bodies, sort of (which I totally haven't explained, but I did only think of this last night), only they're sort of...mixed up with each other, mentally and physically. Harry, in ME, has a vague idea of what Frodo's been doing his entire life, and Frodo, in Hogwarts, has a vague idea of Harry's life, but not at first, and it probably starts to come to them in dreams. Physically, Harry still has his scar, hair, eyes, etc., but he probably also gets some hobbit features, like the feet or something. Frodo maybe hits four feet, finally. As for language barriers, because of the switch, Harry can think in English and speak in Westron if he doesn't think about it too hard, but if he does think about it, it comes out in English and nobody else can understand him. Latin-based spells come out as Quenya; more rarely, Greek-based ones come out as Sindarin. Same for Frodo, except the other way around. This is all twisted up with Horcruxes, and the Ring essentially being one, which Harry now has to destroy, and some Horcrux back at home that Frodo has to help destroy, and something similar happening between Sauron and Voldemort too, and...oh, it's a mess. But it would be SO MUCH FUN.

I think I should probably be dragged out somewhere and shot. I'm flirting with some of the Unpardonable Sins of Fanfiction. And I want to do them ANYWAY.

*goes to bed*
100indecisions: my chains are broken (badfic evil smirk)
Well, I had some concerns about Daemin and posted about them--vaguely--on Deleterius, and then at [livejournal.com profile] redcoast's suggestion I reposted it (and added some background info) on [livejournal.com profile] oc_analysis. One helpful person gave me a link to a very good Mary Sue test that isn't fandom-specific at all--in fact in can be used for either fanfiction or original fiction (though really, what with the high Sue points gained from being related to/sleeping with canon characters, fandom-specific tests are probably best for fanfic Sues).

Naturally, I ran Daemin through it )
100indecisions: my chains are broken (eliot fading star)
*headdesk* So I tried to post this on [livejournal.com profile] oc_analysis and LJ wigged out on me, with the end result that I posted it here and wondered why no one was responding. Yeah, it's over there now.
Cut if anyone wants to read the post )
100indecisions: my chains are broken (mad Cheshire)
I stayed up until near midnight to finish typing a paper last night...but before I started typing it, I had to finish reading the first interlude of Shifts.

I'm addicted.

I'd say "someone stop me," but I'm enjoying myself too much. *glomps Remus*

ETA: The poor man has to learn computers with Windows 3.1???

*dies laughing*

ETA 2: Remus and Dora danced to the prom song in Napoleon Dynamite?

*is absolutely dead from laughing*

Yes. I am sure of this now. Because: sometime last year, [livejournal.com profile] faeriemaiden got her biggest brainstorm for The Song Will Remain while she was in the shower, and because less than a month ago I got bitten by a plotbunny while I was in the library bathroom (though I've not written it yet, still, and I don't remember which one it was).

And today it happened again. And it wasn't a fanfic plotbunny, for the first time in ages. I don't even remember why I was thinking about this, but I wandered into the bathroom today--with a textbook, even, that I was supposed to be reading--and in the back of my mind I was idly thinking about Cydan trying to kill Trin, and why he wanted to do it in a certain place on a certain day, on the anniversary of some awful event (this latter idea from UTT last year, oddly enough).

Well, for reasons I do not understand, the phrase "St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre" popped into my head. I think that was a real historical event, probably something I came across in my history textbook sometime this semester. I don't know what it was. But it doesn't matter: I got that phrase, and I had what can only be described as a real brainstorm, and in about ten minutes I had a whole bunch of everything--all about Cydan, and his semi-tragic past (that does not excuse him from being evil, but at least it gives him something of a reason, which is awesome, and I know now why he's an assassin), and some of his connections with Trin, and why he wants to kill Trin, and why he hates the Brownlows (who STILL NEED NAMES), and more on why Mr. Brownlow hates thieves, and why Cydan has this specific date and place to kill Trin, and...yeah. It was wonderful.

Now I just have to 1) make sure this agrees with what I've already written down about Mr. Brownlow and such, which isn't much, and 2) remember everything until tonight, because with the homework I still have to do in the next hour and fifteen minutes before work, I probably won't be scribbling this down until then.

But still.

*bounces around squeeing*

Man, I already don't have enough time for the writing I want to do, and now all these fanfic plotbunnies are ganging up on me. This is what I've got, so far: )
Now if I could just find some time...!
100indecisions: my chains are broken (eliot winter)
Here's another scene I wrote recently...it takes place the night after Naethiel finds out whose child she is, after which she promptly tries to kill herself and Elurín stops her rather forcefully. He makes her promise that she won't do it, and then things just get worse because there's an Orc attack that's probably Naethiel's fault, and no doubt a lot of people die. (They're in Brethil, I believe.) I've actually written most of that scene, too, but it's not finished. This is after the battle for sure, sometime during the night--they may have left Brethil by now. Not sure. I...don't really like this scene...but so I don't corrupt your first impressions too much, I'll say why at the end.

Oh, the wangst )

See, there are lots of problems with this scene, chief among them being the fact that I didn't write it when I should have and so the finished product came out "faded as a handful of withered leaves". I personally think Naethiel sounds way too melodramatic here, almost petulant, and I don't know what to do with that. About the only decent part is the last sentence, which is the one thing I actually remembered. The content is the same, sure--and with that I'm reasonably pleased--but the writing is really pretty poor.

Remember I said...I don't know when...that my book project for The Red Badge of Courage was an interview with Henry Fleming? Well, this won't look as nice as it did when I turned it in, because I made it fancy and magazine-like with Microsoft Home Publishing and I can't really put all of that on here, but this is what I actually wrote. (Yes, it's supposed to be...goofy.)
